Separating the effect of crop from herbicide on soil microbial communities in glyphosate-resistant corn

Abstract:

Cropping systems that use glyphosate and glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops introduce new compounds into the soil environment and it is not clear how these affect soil bacteria and fungi. This study looked at the impact of both glyphosate and GR corn on denitrifying bacteria and fungi. Neither the transgenic crop nor the herbicide affected denitrifying bacteria or fungal communities, suggesting in the short term, some microbial communities are robust to changes in their environment by GR crops.
